Today, the museum has a long and large collection of objects, documents and recreations of the ingenuity of the habitants of East Berlin, for move to the western side and cross the Berlin Wall and CheckPoint, which tell the story of the Berlin Wall and it´s consequences. Founded on October 19, 1962 by Rainer Hildebrandt, He was the Director of the Museum until his death 14.12.1914 – 09.01.2004. Historian and activist who was part of the resistance group that fought against the communist occupation, which received financial assistance from the United States. The house was called as an Island of Freedom, being the last building just before the border. Also, being called as the first museum of the International fight without violence. In this house, which was expanding constantly, were forged fled plans and gave asylum to the newly escaped. He always exhibited consistently different exposures based on the theme of freedom.
